Ray Shael (Ray as we like to call her) came to Casa de Milagros nine years ago when she was five years old. Her mother committed suicide in front of her by ingesting rat poison; at which point she and her nine-month old half sister, Doris, were cared for by her maternal grandparents for about three months. Ray’s father’s identity is unknown, as her mother became pregnant with her while working in Lima for a period of time.
Through a bit of good fortune, Ray’s grandparents found out about the Casa...
... and her grandfather then brought her to Mama Kia. The Casa accepted her immediately, petitioned the court, and were thankfully granted legal custody without any issues.
Ray is a vivacious and multi-talented young girl, and an extremely sweet and loving big sister to her other siblings. Recently, we have had the blessing of finally gaining custody of her half-sister, Doris, so they are busy getting to know each other and catching up on lost time. Ray is now in her second year of secondary school (equivalent to 8th grade in the U.S.) and is a good student, however, she much prefers to spend her time singing, dancing, or knitting. She is a member of the Chandler Sky band as a singer and has performed in several concerts with her brothers and sisters as of late. When she arrived at Casa, she only spoke Quechua (the local language)– but is now fluent in Spanish, Quechua, and quickly learning English.
Thanks to your generosity the Complete Balance community is sponsoring her on-going education. Because you have made your health a priority, Ray is getting an opportunity that many of us have taken for granted, but all of us deserve… a good education.
Stay tuned for more updates. We are hoping to sponsor a second child soon and get an update from Ray herself as to what life is like for her at Casa de Milagros.
